love letters for hedgehogs

I hate to admit that this has grown on me. I attribute it to the general increase in the amount of hiphop/rap I’ve been listening to. It’s always fun to exercise your ears.

Doc Watson

—Your Long Journey

Here I was thinking things couldn’t get much sadder around here. Then this goes and happens. Sad days all around.

Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson passed away on Tuesday May 29, 2012 at a hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He was 89 years old. This simply breaks my Southern heart. There are few people in this world that were both as talented and genuinely humble as Doc.

I remember working as a lighting tech at a show he was performing at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC in the summer of 2008. At one point, Doc was in a picking circle backstage with Riley Vargus and a number of other friends and acquaintances. Every single person on that job site - the grips, the lighting techs, the caterers, everyone - stopped working and just stood in silent awe, struck by the graceful power of his words and chords. They broke the mold when they made this man.

Read about Doc’s music and life here.

Highbrow Lowbrow of the Day: Sir David Attenborough, famed for the narration that brings an air of dignity to nature documentaries like Planet Earth and Frozen Planet, tries to bring that same elevation to the classic YouTube video of a small tortoise enthusiastically humping a shoe.

It’s a testament to Sir David’s talent that it actually kind of works.

Look At This Thieving Dog of the Day: Canteloupe the two-year-old Italian Greyhound loves to steal things from her owner’s desk, so a friend decided to set up a camera and catch her red-pawed.

CamelsAndFriends, the YouTuber behind the doggie surveillance operation, writes:

It got me wondering how exactly she gets up there and how she chooses what she steals, so I decided to start filming! I left the camera on a tripod pointed at the desk and a week later these are my results of Cantaloupe’s exploits.

The evidence is clear, ladies and gentlemen. You must find this dog guilty of being cute.
